Our people: Nuclear Recruiter, Gemma Nixon

Nuclear Recruiter, Gemma Nixon is a Recruitment Partner for Nuclear, Waste and Decommissioning at Astute.

For the Our People series, she spoke with Sam Bradshaw about her recent recruitment successes.

How did you get into recruitment?

I actually “fell” into recruitment through a family friend who worked at Astute at the time.

I did my degree and I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do.

I had never considered a career in recruitment before but have always loved working with people. I thought it sounded like a great opportunity, and six years later, I’m still here and loving it!

What roles have you filled recently and at what types of companies?

As a Nuclear Recruiter, I work in the Nuclear industry across our Decommissioning and Hazardous Waste sector.

This means that I focus heavily on Radiation Protection, Safety Case and Health Physics roles, as well as lots of Project Managers, Waste Engineers and Senior Site staff.

What is your favourite thing about working as a Nuclear Recruiter at Astute?

For me working with people is one of the best bits about Astute.

This includes my amazing colleagues I see every day in the office, as well as all my clients and candidates.

Building relationships is very important to me, and Astute has the best ethos around this.

What have you enjoyed most about your recent successes as a Nuclear Recruiter?

I have really loved stepping into the Team Leader role and transitioning into building our Nuclear team here.

Seeing the team build the desk, have success with new clients and learn new things about the sector every day is so rewarding.

What is the most exciting thing about your market?

The Nuclear industry is evolving rapidly in the UK market, with new innovations being discussed each week.

As a Nuclear Recruiter, this allows me to learn something new about the sector every day.

Radioactive Waste Management is a worldwide conversation at the moment, and it’s really exciting to be involved in the development of this side of the sector.

What advice would you give someone who’s looking to join Astute?

Have a look at the industries we work in and see what you find interesting.

One of the best things about Astute is that we are all really passionate about the industries we are involved with, and this is what drives us.

It’s all about passion and confidence and wanting to be successful for not only yourself but also your clients and candidates.
