Celebrating Apprenticeship Week: Laura Clark’s Journey at Astute

At Astute, we believe in investing in talent and supporting career growth through apprenticeships.

As part of Apprenticeship Appreciation Week, we’re shining a spotlight on Laura Clark, our Finance Apprentice, who is undertaking her apprenticeship in partnership with PETA Ltd.

Laura joined Astute with a passion for finance and a desire to gain hands-on experience while earning industry-recognised qualifications.

We caught up with her to learn more about her journey so far.

Starting a new career path

Before joining Astute, Laura worked in healthcare but was keen to explore a career in finance.

Choosing an apprenticeship was a natural fit, as it allowed her to gain both qualifications and practical experience at the same time.

“I had always considered doing a finance apprenticeship, so I looked for a company with a good training pathway that would support me as I earned my qualifications, Laura explains.

A day in the life of a finance apprentice

Working as a Finance Apprentice at Astute means no two days are the same. Laura’s role covers a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • Contractor payroll
  • Processing payments
  • Checking new placements and clients
  • Sales and purchase ledger
  • Maintaining cash flow and reconciliation

This hands-on experience, combined with her studies, has given Laura a well-rounded understanding of finance within a business.

“My studies help me understand the context behind my activities at work, which means I can pick up new tasks more easily. I can apply what I learn at college to my tasks at work,” she says.

Why choose an apprenticeship?

For those considering an apprenticeship, Laura highlights the benefits of learning on the job while gaining formal qualifications.

She values the structured support from both PETA Ltd and the Astute team, which has helped her build confidence and develop her skills.

Her advice to future apprentices?

  • Time management is key – balancing work and studies requires good organisation.
  • Ask lots of questions – it’s the best way to develop a deep understanding.
  • Do your research – find a company that offers career growth and additional qualifications.

The best part about working at Astute

For Laura, Astute’s workplace culture is a major highlight.

“Astute has a great working environment, and I feel like I’m part of a team.

“My colleagues are very supportive, and they celebrate my successes while helping me develop professionally,” she shares.

She also values the company’s benefits, particularly the 9-day fortnight, which allows employees to enjoy a better work-life balance.

She enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, taking on new challenges, and gaining independence in key financial tasks.
