From call centre to recruitment: Meg Balmer’s journey to Astute

Recruitment wasn’t always on the radar for Meg Balmer, Senior Talent Specialist on the Power Desk at Astute.

Before joining the team, she worked in a call centre while studying at university, gaining valuable communication and problem-solving skills. However, the work lacked the sense of reward and progression she was looking for.

“I started looking into ways to transfer my skills into a new career path,” Meg shares. “That’s when I discovered recruitment. It can be just as challenging, but the rewards, both professionally and personally, make it all worthwhile.”

Driving talent in Power Operations & Maintenance

As a key player on Astute’s Power Desk, Meg specialises in recruiting top talent for Operations and Maintenance roles across the country.

Her day-to-day responsibilities involve sourcing candidates, conducting initial screenings, providing interview guidance, and collaborating with clients to offer valuable market insights.

“It’s all about building relationships,” she says. “Understanding what candidates are looking for and aligning them with the right opportunities is such a rewarding part of the job.”

A culture of support and growth

For Meg, the best part of working at Astute is the unwavering support from her colleagues.

“We have an incredible team of driven professionals who not only want to succeed themselves but also genuinely support each other’s growth,” she explains.

“It creates such a positive and motivating atmosphere. Plus, our social events are always a great time!”

Making an impact

One of the most exciting aspects of Meg’s role is the impact of the projects she recruits for.

“My sector is filled with projects that have a meaningful impact on the future. It’s always exciting to see people’s curiosity and enthusiasm,” she says. “I love sharing in that excitement while connecting them with opportunities that truly make a difference.”

Beyond recruitment, Meg enjoys following up with candidates after they’ve started their new roles.

“Whether it’s a day, a week, or a month later, hearing how they’re settling in and progressing in their careers is incredibly fulfilling,” she says.
